Heart Warming

The year before last, when Cole was in afternoon preschool, I would make up games on the way to school to keep Harper from falling asleep in the car. If she fell asleep on the way there, then she wouldn’t take a nap when we got home. One day, as we were driving, I was doing the whole, “What’s a horse say?” routine. The kids were answering each question I’d ask and it was fun. I was running out of questions, so I blurted out, “What’s a mailbox say?”

To that they didn’t have an answer, so I answered for them, “Put mail in me! Put mail in me!” They thought that was the funniest thing they’d ever heard and laughed themselves silly all the way to school.

Since then, occasionally we’ll play that same game. “What’s a house say?” (live in me) or “What’s a tree say?” (put leaves on me) etc.

Today, Harper and I were goofing around and we started playing that game and I said, “What’s daddy say?”

Harper’s response: “Give me hugs and kisses! Give me hugs and kisses!”

I almost didn’t ask, because I was afraid of what the answer might be! But I did. “What’s mom say?”

Harper’s response: “I love you! I love you!”

That made me really happy – I wasn’t sure what to expect, and certainly “NO! NO!” would have been a fairly truthful answer.

Song I used to sing to Cole:

Mommy says “no, no.”
Daddy says “yes, yes.”
What’s a boy to do?
It’s anyone’s guess.

Mommy says “no, no.”
Daddy says “yes, yes.”
Better do what Mommy says.
That would be best.

Probably the most truthful answer would have been, “Just a minute! Just a minute!”

We do the “What does…say” game too. A long standing addition in our house has been “What does Mommy say?” “I loooooove you”.

“What does Daddy say?” “No. No. No.”
